What is Martial Arts?
Martial Arts can be defined as a system of techniques – physical and mental exercises developed as a successful means for self-defense, both armed and unarmed. Today, martial arts are practiced for health, fitness, sport, law enforcement and spiritual benefits.
Training in martial arts imparts many benefits to the trainee, both corporal and spiritual. Through systematic practice in the martial arts a person’s physical fitness is boosted including strength, stamina, flexibility, movement and co-ordination. As the whole body is exercised and the whole muscular system is activated. In connection with the learning of correct breathing and an improved and wholesome diet, martial arts are an effective way of fighting many problems and diseases of contemporary society and sedentary life, and, generally, of a weakened immunity system.
Some styles focus on grappling while others put their emphasis on striking. Weaponless systems use hand, arm, foot, shin, and knee striking and blocking techniques. Some weapons that may be used are the staff, sword, knife, dagger and nunchaku.
Self-control, determination and concentration characterise the trainee, who always reacts productively and without stress when the circumstances demand it. Through training, each individual gets to know themselves and their capabilities better as well as their sense of respect and right. Martial arts also have the nature of an art, since there is emotional communication and complete emotional expression. Martial arts may also be described as a way for the individual to discover oneself and their environment.
